Dog grooming is an essential part of his physical wellbeing and care, and also a great opportunity to check up on his overall health.
Why is dog grooming important?
For us humans, grooming is an essential part of our daily routine: we shower, comb our hair, and brush our teeth every day. Dogs, on the other hand, don’t need daily grooming, but it’s equally important for them. Grooming your dog minimizes shedding, decreases the possibility of infections, stops the germs from spreading throughout your house, and keeps your dog’s coat shiny and healthy.
Pet store vs Home
You can either groom your dog at home, or you can take him to a pet store or grooming salon. Taking your dog to a pet store is probably easier since all you have to do is drive him to the pet store and pick him up later. However, it is definitely a more expensive and upsetting experience for your pup. Dogs can undergo a lot of stress in those situations, especially if they are not familiar with the place. On the other hand, if you groom your dog at home, you will need more time and patience (and cleaning after!) but you'll make sure your dog feels comfy and chilled.Grooming your dog at home
If you decide to groom your dog at home, these are some of the steps you should follow:
-
Combing and brushing: Before bathing your dog, make sure to remove all tangles or mats. Otherwise, they can remain humid and damage your dog’s skin. Also, it will prevent pipeline hair clogging.
-
Bathing: To give him a pleasant bath, your shampoo of choice is crucial. Dogs’ skin can easily become dehydrated, so it is very important to use products that include moisturizers while providing soothing benefits for your dog’s skin. MOKAI has an entire line of hypoallergenic shampoos which contain natural ingredients such as aloe, oatmeal, and chamomile.
-
Drying: This is a very important step that people tend to skip. Humidity can be your dog’s worst enemy (it can damage its skin and cause hot spots), so drying his coat is essential. You can dry them up with towels or even with a hairdryer. However, if you are using a hairdryer, you need to be extremely careful. First of all, make sure the temperature of the airflow is right. Pay special attention to your dog throughout the entire process to avoid burning him.
-
Cleaning his ears: Dogs are more prone to develop ear infections, so it’s important to clean your dog’s ears often to avoid them. At MOKAI’s, we have an ear cleaner with an advanced anti-bacterial formula, which prevents microbial activity while cleaning the area.
-
Cleaning his teeth: Your dog’s breath has changed and you don’t know how to fix it? Even though teeth brushing is not the most viable option for all dogs, their oral hygiene is extremely important. It helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and also reduce bacteria responsible for bad breath. You can use MOKAI’s dental wipes for quick and easy hygiene while removing bacteria and microbes.
-
Trimming his nails: This step is probably the most difficult. You will need to have a nail clipper at home and tons of patience. Start slowly, observe your dog’s response. Let him smell the nail clipper and show him it is harmless. If he gets very upset, you can give him some licking treat throughout the process. Do not hurry: if he seems reluctant to it, you can try again tomorrow.
